 Alumni
Gather, Raise Money
for Campus Beautification
More than $2500 was raised
for campus beautification projects at the first
UB Alumni Association meeting of the new year,
held on Thursday, February 3 at Waldemere Hall.
Sonya Kelepecz, Director of Development, hailed
the meeting as a success and plans to hold more
alumni meetings around the region in the coming
months.
President Salonen spoke to the gathering and
outlined his plans for strengthening the
University. He called upon all alumni to join
with him in transforming UB into a world class
university.
Contributions to the Campus Beautification 2000
fund can be sent to the Alumni Office, Bryant
Hall, 271 Park Ave., Bridgeport, CT 06601.
University
Improves Safety On Campus
The University was
presented with the Hartford Insurance Company's
Award
of Merit this month for safety improvements on
campus. Progress was made in both identifying and
improving existing and potential safety problems,
according to Paul Engemann, Director of
Facilities Management. "This not only saves
the University money but more importantly reduces
the incidence of injuries on the campus,"
Engemann said. "We focused on increasing the
inspection of buildings and looking for potential
safety problems, such as loose tiles on the
floor, sufficient emergency lighting and clear
exits from the buildings," said Engemann.

Also, the University was
able to save a significant amount of money during
the past year on worker's compensation insurance
premiums, Engemann said. "We've become a lot
more progressive in limiting work related
injuries. Employee injuries that do occur are
reported in a more timely fashion and the work
site can be more quickly inspected in order to
avoid future injuries," Engemann said.
"Employee training has been beefed up as
well as follow-up education with the
employees."
"Campus security director Jim Mooney and his
staff have been outstanding in identifying
potential safety hazards and have played an
active role in limiting risk to people on
campus," said Engemann.
Welcome
to Our New Chief Financial Officer
Tyler A. Kelsch, 31, will
start as Vice President of Administration and
Finance at UB on March 1, filling a spot left
vacant since last June by Arthur C. Roberts, Jr.
Interim CFO Bob Mooney has been filling in until
a new person could be found.
"I'm looking forward to the
challenge."
TYLER A. KELSCH
"I'm looking forward
to the challenge," said Kelsch in a recent
interview. Kelsch is currently the comptroller
for Regis University in Denver, Colorado, a
Jesuit affiliated school where about 90 percent
of their 11,500 students are adults who receive
their instruction at satellite campuses or via
the Internet. He helped manage a $60 million
budget at Regis. UB's annual operating budget is
about $41 million.
"He's a young guy who spent quite a bit of
time with our auditing firm, with a number of our
trustees, and he was the unanimous choice,"
said President Salonen in a recent interview.
Kelsch received his bachelor's degree from Regis
in 1991 and MBA in 1995, working his way up from
account intern to comptroller at his alma mater.
President
Salonen Attacked By
Fire Breathing Dragon

In celebration of the
Chinese New Year, the Japanese Student
Association led by Hiro Yamaoka and Koji Okamoto
danced the dragon, and barely prevented President
Salonen from being bitten at Marina Dining Hall.
The Taiwanese Student Association joined in with
a repertoire of traditional songs.
