UB honors BEST in Bridgeport high schools

ridgeport's top 100 high school juniors and 12 students
from Roosevelt and Longfellow schools were honored as
part of the university's BEST program. Superior Court
Judge Barry K. Stevens inspired the audience, explaining
that education had been his lifeline growing up in Norwalk.
He urged the students to "reach high. The sky's the
limit if you go for it.” Student Sam Dalton of Bassick
High School accepted a four-year scholarship to the
university, awarded through UB's partnership with Bridgeport
schools. Three students — Nancy Santiago and Monique
Rivera, both from Roosevelt, and Margarita Jules of
Longfellow — also received scholarships to the university
at the ceremony, attended by 277 students and family
members. The students came from Bassick, Central, Warren
Harding, Bullard Havens Technical, Kolbe Cathedral,
and Bridge Academy.
Bol goes for dunk at UB once again

anute Bol, a Dinka tribe member from Sudan,
came to the university in the fall of 1984. At 7-foot-6
with a 6-foot arm span, he was a presence on campus,
and even more on the basketball court at the Harvey
Hubbell Gymnasium. Bol came back to UB and the Hubbell
Gym in June to run a father-son camp to benefit his
Ring True Foundation, which aids displaced Sudanese
families. Bol was lured away from UB to play for the
Washington Bullets after his phenomenal year at the
university. During his rookie year, he set the NBA record
for blocked shots.
