From the President...
t rained on Commencement day, but this year we didn't even have a "rain plan." Instead, we held the ceremony at the new Arena at Harbor Yard, Bridgeport's impressive sports and entertainment facility — making the event "weather proof" — and everyone loved it! With comfortable indoor seating for the graduates and 5,000 family members, ample parking, refreshment stands — all the comforts of home — there was no need to worry about the weather.

The university's two-year 75th anniversary celebration was formally launched at graduation. Alumni and friends attended a luncheon in honor of 1971 alumnus Fred DeLuca, the founder and head of Subway, after he received an honorary degree and gave the commencement speech. Golden Knights Arlene Kaplan Hewitt of Alexandria, Va.; Manus Sternshein of Long Beach, N.Y., and Mary Whelan of Greenwich, all from the class of 1952, joined in the ceremonies and luncheon.
The Alumni Association honored five of its distinguished members at the June 12 reception: Peter Clarke, Class of '90, founder and president of Product Ventures Ltd., a design firm; Kevin Dunn, '71 and '87, the first Connecticut state's attorney to prosecute domestic violence cases exclusively; Vickie Orsini Nardello, '71 and '75, a state representative and past leader of the Connecticut Dental Hygienists Association, who in that capacity won legislation to give hygienists the right to practice their profession independent of dentists and to shift licensing from the Dental Commission to the Department of Public Health; Jeff Sandler, '70, a marine educator known internationally as "Mr. Fish," who has changed the whole course of aquarium education programs; and writer, poet and playwright Richard Fewell, '76 and '79, who has published extensively and has been honored as a distinguished college teacher and an advocate for the arts.
On June 27, selections from the university's valued art holdings were featured in an exhibition opening. The opening event was in the Carlson Art Gallery of the Arnold Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center. The exhibition runs through Sept. 15.
Fireworks lit up the campus on June 29 as the university kicked off the Independence Day celebration and welcomed UB employees and their families and students to a benefit for the Athletic Department. "Around the World in 75 Years" was UB's float theme as it appeared in the P.T. Barnum Great Street Parade on June 30. Great fun was had by all as the float was cheered along the parade route.
Look for another alumni event as UB hosts an evening of fun at Harbor Yard on Aug. 31 when the Atlantic League Bridgeport Bluefish play the Pennsylvania Road Warriors. Skybox viewing will give all a bird's eye view, with proceeds benefiting athletic scholarships.
Use the summer to get that drive and putt working for you because you'll want to be part of the UB tournament on Oct. 11. It's at the Whitney Farms Country Club in Monroe. In early October, the fairways will be ablaze with the colors of fall.
Great things are happening at UB! Students are collecting prizes and honors in competition with top universities. Graduates are landing important jobs and getting into top graduate schools. UB's athletes may not be signing big pro contracts, but they're consistently scoring on the Dean's List while reaching conference playoffs. It shows that these first 75 years were just a hint of the achievements to come.
