Commencement
2002: Subway founder and UB alumnus tells graduates
to never give up.
here
were solemn moments and joyous ones as 1,150 University
of Bridgeport students received their degrees in the
92nd Commencement ceremony, held for the first time
at Bridgeport's new Arena at Harbor Yard on May12.

Fred DeLuca, the UB grad who founded and runs Subway restaurants, receives an honorary doctorate from President Salonen. DeLuca, as graduation speaker, told the graduates: "Every destination is worthwhile, even if it’s just selling sandwiches." |
One of the university's best known and most successful graduates, Frederick A. DeLuca, who founded the Subway restaurants, received an honorary doctorate of humane letters.
It was very special to receive this honor, DeLuca said, in that his mother, Carmella, had always wanted him to become a doctor. When he received his degree, he looked up at her in her seat and said, "Mom, I finally got it."

UB
students auto safety stars; featured at Lime Rock exhibit
rize-winning
auto and driving safety designs created by University
of Bridgeport design students were featured over Memorial
Day weekend and will be on exhibit later in the summer
at Connecticut's famed Lime Rock Park NASCAR auto racing.

Famous auto racer Skip Barber, who owns Lime Rock and provided the UB designers with the exhibit tent, has Jim Lesko, left, director of the Design program, all smiles. |
The race track is providing the exhibition to promote UB's leadership in auto safety design. On exhibit are safety designs by UB students, who in recent international competitions at the New York Auto Show, against the top design schools in the United States and abroad, won the first, second and fifth prizes. The competition was sponsored by the Greater New York Auto Dealers Association, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the Norman J. Levy Foundation, the National Road Safety Foundation, Saab and Volvo.
