Kiam's
legacy
 |
Victor
K. Kiam Jr. was a business leader and master salesman.
He was perhaps best known as the guy who went on television
to talk about the Remington electric shaver his wife
gave him as a present. "I liked it so much, I bought
the company," his famous commercial said.
Kiam, who owned the New England Patriots
for a time, also cared about education, and served on
the board at UB. He died in May.
He was always supportive of the university.
Sure, he gave money. But, a busy man, he gave something
even more valuable. He gave his time.
Though Kiam's strength was in sales,
he knew education. He went to Yale as an undergraduate
and received his master's in business from the Harvard
Business School. He served on the UB board from the
mid 1980s to the mid 1990s.
In August, the university received
another reminder of how much Kiam cared. A $25,000 check
came for scholarships. It was the proceeds of an insurance
policy he bought and on which designated the university
the beneficiary. He used a speaking fee to buy the policy.
At the time, he said the investment would grow and when
he died, his gift would mean more to UB, and to him.
It does, Victor. Thank you.
