 From the President...

Neil Albert Salonen - UB President

ext year, the university marks its 75th year. It is a proud past, one that will open the way to a bold future. I want you, the university's alumni and friends, to be a part of it.
This is my second year as president. We have made significant commitments to a strong academic program. The professional schools and programs are solid - business, education, science and engineering, chiropractic and naturopathic, industrial design, dental hygiene and fashion merchandising, among many others. So are the arts and humanities, much of which is now part of the International College. Our graduate program thrives here on campus and at facilities in Stamford and Waterbury.
We have become truly an international college in our student demographics. And we're international in the classroom. The issues that we face - economics, human rights, poverty, pollution and others - are not isolated to the United States. They are concerns all over the world. So in the classroom they are covered from a global perspective.
The Internet has opened all campuses, including ours, to the world. A number of courses are offered over the Internet through our UB Online Distance Learning program. You can study the economic issues of Latin America or get yourself certified as a Microsoft systems engineer through courses you can sign up for on our Web site, www.bridgeport.edu.
We have taken big steps towards improving facilities, particularly in the mall and library areas and campus core.
Now we're committed to rebuilding our base, which is you - our alumni and friends - and our enrollments.
This newsletter is one way we can tell you what's going on. We'll be having alumni receptions to do more. We'll be in Boston Oct. 25. Other dates will be announced on the Web site and you'll get mailings when one is in your area.
We need your help and support. We need to make everyone aware of the "new UB" and to rebuild the fiscal strength of the university, particularly in increasing scholarship funds. We have been steadly increasing enrollment. It would be even more if only we could offer enough need-based financial aid to all the students who apply.
Remember how much your college experience and degree has meant to you - and help us offer that same opportunity to as many other worthy students as possible.
You are an important part of UB. We want and need your input and feedback.
