Himalayan Night
by Jack Ndombi

Members of the UB community were recently entertained by a show called 'Himalayan Night', organized by the UB Himalayan Club. The show is an annual tradition of the club and features different cultural events from countries in the Himalayan region, including China, Nepal, Tibet, Pakistan, India and Myanmar. The show featured Nepali dances and songs, slide shows of the region, fashion shows with clothes from the region and Nepali food. Nepali students organized most of these events with some help from other students.

Chinese students also preformed ethnic songs, dances and martial arts. The new Soul Beat dance ensemble also had a performance.

Members of the audience had dressed for the occasion and many were in traditional Indian, Nepali and Chinese attire. The audience could not help laugh during the dances as the men tried to woo the women. Many students were very impressed with the fashion show. "It was diverse and looked very professional," commented Tokunbo Olaleyi.

The Himalayan Night was a great success and attracted over 400 students. With a semester filled with lots of other cultural events like, Diwali Night, I-Themba and Korean Night, UB students get to taste what the world has to offer.

University Gallery Presents Artist d'Ann de Simone

he University Gallery of the University of Bridgeport featured the paintings of renowned artist d'Ann de Simone, November 15-December 17. There was a closing reception open to the public on December 17, 1-4 PM in the Gallery.

Ms. De Simone's exhibition was entitled, "Conversari". The artist's paintings often feature key compositional elements derived from two types of microorganisms: marine dinoflagellates and ciliated protozoa. "My goal is to create a world that incorporates the dialectical encounter between the scientific objectivity of the organisms themselves and my subjectivity as an artist," de Simone writes.

Gallery hours are normally Wednesday through Saturday, 1-5 PM. The University Gallery is located on the first floor of the Arnold Bernhard Arts & Humanities Center (corner of University and Iranistan Avenues) on the University of Bridgeport campus.
