Presidential Debates at UB
By Abhishek Shrestha
n Thursday, November 2, the student club SCUBA hosted a re-run of the US presidential debates. It was held in the Tower Room of the Arnold Bernhard Center. Yale Law students Josh Rosenstein, Ed Burley and Jeff King presented the views and policies of Ralph Nader, Vice-President Al Gore and Gov. George W. Bush. Ikenna Emehelu, an alumnus of UB who is currently attending Yale Law School, was the moderator.
With more than 75 students present, Prof. Lamont Thomas, the adviser to SCUBA, welcomed everyone. For every question, each candidate was given two minutes to answer, two minutes to respond to another's answer, and two minutes for his own rebuttal. Finally, they were awarded another two minutes for their closing statements.
The candidates addressed a variety of issues such as prison reform, immigration, social security, the entertainment industry, abortion, gay marriages and foreign policy.
At the end of the evening, the floor was open to questions from the audience. The speakers put forth their own personal opinions of the presidential candidates and the inclusion of Ralph Nader in the forum. Anthony Wade, a sophomore, said that the debates were very informative. " I didn't have to deal with the fancy rhetoric the actual candidates use - that helped," he added.

Sports Round-Up
By Mike Ruane, Director of Sports Information
he fall athletics season was a successful one for the University of Bridgeport men's and women's teams. UB's men's team finished in 5th place out of 9 teams in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference NYCAC. They finished with a 4-10-1 overall record and a 3-3-1 record in the NYCAC. The Purple Knights were led in scoring by Lucas Meadows (8 goals and 2 assists) and freshman Lee Sharkey (5 goals and I assist). UB's women's soccer team finished with an overall record of 7-12-0. This was very impressive given the fact that they didn't win a game last season going 0-15 in 1999. Second year head coach Magnus Nilerud, a former all conference player at UB, brought in a very impressive recruiting class and their future bright. Leading the way for the Purple Knights was freshman forward Diana Silonova (7 goals and 4 assists), senior Sara Osborne (5 goals and 2 assists), and senior Julie Jarvis (5 goals and 3 assists). Sophomore goalkeeper Trinity Belgrave recorded 73 saves including 2 shutouts and a goal against average of 2.75.
