Official Opening of Four New Computer Labs at
University of Bridgeport

he University officially opened four new computer labs at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, November 17. UB alumnus John Fabrizi, '91, who is also the President of Bridgeport's City Council, joined with University President Neil Salonen and several Sun Microsystems executives to dedicate the labs. Three of the new labs are located at the main campus in Bridgeport and one lab containing 20 computers is located at the UB Stamford campus.

  The University of Bridgeport was the recipient of a Sun Microsystems' educational grant totaling $95,000 towards the purchase of 97 Sun Sparc, Ultra5 and Ultra 10 workstations. The new computers put UB near the top of the ranking in computing power at Connecticut's universities.

  The Computer Science and Engineering program at UB is the number one major for students with 550 enrolled in the program. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The accelerated weekend program for Masters of Science in Computer Science continues to expand and is the only one of its kind in the greater NY/CT/NJ/MA area.

UB Bestows High Honors on Telecommunications Pioneer

he University of Bridgeport conferred an Honorary Doctorate degree upon James R. S. Hatt, the former President and CEO of Metromedia International Telecommunications. The ceremony took place on Friday, November 3, at 5:00 PM in the Tower Room of the Arnold Bernhard Center. President Salonen presided over the ceremony which drew about 100 students and guests.

  Mr. Hatt has played a key role in bringing vital telecommunications to the countries of the former Soviet Union. He has also helped the University of Bridgeport establish important contacts in those countries and his company utilizes UB interns.

  Several United Nations' Ambassadors attended the ceremony and the dinner afterward at Waldemere Hall, including those from the Republic of Georgia, the Republic of Hungary, the Czech Republic and the Kyrgyz Republic. The Consul General of the Russian Federation also attended.
