Gov. Dannel Malloy to receive honorary degree and address graduates at University of Bridgeport’s 2014 Commencement

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy will deliver the Commencement Address and receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters at the University of Bridgeport’s graduation exercises on Saturday, May 10, 2014.
Approximately, 1,150 graduates will receive degrees during the 104th Commencement, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport.
“Gov. Malloy is a most fitting speaker to inspire our graduates. He has been a champion of higher education and a longstanding supporter of UB,” said University President Neil A. Salonen.
Gov. Malloy said, “The University of Bridgeport is in a transformative period, each year becoming more and more central to the growth of the regional economy while preparing students for 21st-century jobs in fields we are expanding right here in Connecticut. I look forward to continue working with this institution of higher learning to create a talented, well-educated workforce that attracts high-quality employers to our state.”
Gov. Malloy was sworn in as the 88th governor of Connecticut on January 5, 2011, and has since stabilized the state’s finances by closing the nation’s largest per-capita deficit, worked with the General Assembly to build a $50-million surplus in the current fiscal year, and has taken significant steps to make state government leaner and more efficient.
He also spearheaded a range of economic and workforce-development initiatives, such as the First Five and the Small Business Express Program that have helped create nearly 53,000 private sector jobs for Connecticut residents since January 2011. Last year, the state added 21,300 private sector jobs – one of the best years on record for job growth in Connecticut.
Gov. Malloy is a graduate of Boston College and Boston College Law School. In 1982, Governor Malloy married his wife, Cathy, whom he met while at Boston College. They have three sons: Dannel, Ben, and Sam.
