Beyond boundaries: Chinese women’s volleyball team arrives at UB on September 15 for three matches, cultural exchange, and friendly competition
To some, it’s just a game. But to a group of champion volleyball players from China and the University of Bridgeport, a series of matches to be held at UB next week represents an opportunity to share their passion and talent for the sport that defies cultural boundaries.
Fifteen champion players from Zhejiang University will arrive at UB this Sunday, September 15. They will be welcomed the Purple Knights and feted at a special luncheon with the volleyball team the following day.
And of course, they will play volleyball, too, practicing together before facing off during three matches, all beginning at 7 p.m. at the Hubbell Gymnasium on Tuesday, September 17, Thursday, September 19, and Tuesday, September 24.
All games are free and open to the public.
One of UB’s players, junior Jade Zhao, is from China and already knows some of the members of the Zhejiang team. Other Purple Knights cannot wait to do the same.
“I think it’s amazing,” said volleyball team Captain Larissa Olivera, who is from Brazil.
“On our team, we have people from all over the world—China, Sweden, Italy, the U.S. We’re very international; that’s the best part. We learn something new different from each other every day. This is going to be a great experience for us, too. I’m sure we will start off with volleyball questions—how do they practice? How do they prepare for a game? They are very good players. But then it will probably go into culture and school in China. Everyone is looking forward to meeting them.”
Zhejiang University is located in the city of Hangzhou in China’s Zhejiang Province on the nation’s east coast. Founded in 1897, Zhejiang University is one of China’s oldest institutions of higher education. As a team, Zhejiang finished third in the prestigious 2011-2012 Chinese Collegiate Premier League.
The Purple Knights are the 2012 East Coast Conference Champions, and the Purple Knights have made four consecutive NCAA Division II East Regional Final appearances.
