Degree Program

The major in Literature and Civilization emphasizes connections between the various Humanities disciplines, especially Literature, History, and Philosophy. By cultivating skills of critical analysis and effective writing, and furthering the understanding of abstract ideas and historical trajectories, the major enables students to prepare for graduate study and to pursue careers in teaching, the professions, and business. The major provides students with the skills, knowledge, and insights that accrue from the integrative study of literature, history and philosophy, as well as other liberal arts disciplines. The degree requires 42 hours in literature, history, and philosophy, 40 hours of General Education, and 6 hours of language study. Students may also use 26 hours of Electives to explore special areas of interest.

The curriculum in Literature and Civilization is divided into three Groups. In Group One, students are introduced to humanities disciplines, methods, and content. Required and elective courses in history, literature, philosophy, and the fine arts constitute the core of this Group. Taken in the senior year, Group Two consists of seminars that focus on humanistic methods of enquiry and the preparation of a research thesis.

In Group Three, students choose an academic Concentration. Each Concentration requires 15 hours, comprised of required courses and electives. Especially motivated students are encouraged to pursue two Concentrations. Students choose from the following Concentrations.

Creative Writing
English
History
Philosophy

Since the University is committed in each of its majors to fulfilling its academic mission, the major in Literature and Civilization requires competency in a modern language through the intermediate level, in order to ensure multicultural competency.

Below is a video of Rosemary Landano, a Literature and Civilization major, talking about her experience with the major and UB.
