College is not solely about getting your degree, but also what you make of your college experience. The next four years are a crucial time in your overall professional development.

The Center for Career Development has created a structured “Four-Year Career Development Plan” for undergraduate students, which outlines the tools and resources that you should be taking advantage of throughout your time at the University of Bridgeport. Adhering to the timeline will help you to gain a competitive edge that will allow you to stand out in a competitive job market.

Freshman Year


Goals:

  • Learn about the Center for Career Development
  • Register for UBjobnet, our online job portal
  • Build a professional resume on Optimal Resume
  • Meet with a Career Counselor to create a personal Career Development Plan
  • Become involved in extracurricular activities

Activities:

  • Join clubs and organizations to develop interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills
  • Visit the Center for Career Development to seek help in obtaining a part-time or summer job relevant to your interests
  • Take a variety of classes to gain a wide range of skills and knowledge
  • Start to network with professors, advisors, staff members, and administrators
  • Become involved in extracurricular activities

Sophomore Year


Goals:

  • Strive for strong a GPA and academic achievements
  • Continue to research and explore career options
  • Learn about cooperative education and/or internship opportunities
  • Meet with the Center for Career Development Staff to evaluate your Career Development Plan

Activities:

  • Attend on-campus company information sessions
  • Continue to use assessment tools
  • Visit the Center for Career Development to learn and prepare for internships or summer jobs
  • Participate in career-related workshops and presentations
  • Attend the Career and Internship Fair
  • Search for and join professional associations
  • Submit your resume to the Optimal Resume review center for approval
  • Conduct informational interviews with professionals in your desired field

Junior Year


Goals:

  • Obtain practical work / internship experience
  • Consider graduate school options
  • Prepare your professional documents and skills to enter the job market

Activities:

  • Research graduate school options and take the GRE, GMAT, or LSAT, if needed
  • Continue to network with professionals and attend the Career and Internship Fair
  • Visit the Center for Career Development to update your resume and practice interviewing skills
  • Maintain involvement in extracurricular activities

Senior Year


Goals:

  • Complete a second internship
  • Continue to expand your professional network
  • Secure employment or graduate school acceptance

Activities:

  • Search and apply for positions using UBjobnet
  • Set up a mock-interview with the Center for Career Development
  • Attend on- and off-campus career fairs
  • Apply to graduate school programs if interested
