1. Who can use counseling services?
Counseling services are available to all registered students: full-time/part-time, undergraduate/graduate students.
2. What services are offered?
Counseling services offers a private and confidential atmosphere for students to talk about their personal worries and concerns about college life or life in general. Services are provided by professional staff. Psychiatric services and medication management are available as well.
3. Where is counseling services located and what are the office hours?
Our offices are located 174 University Avenue, Carstensen Hall, 2nd Floor. Counseling services shares a reception area with Student Health Services. The offices are open 8:30-4:30 M-F while school is in session. (See main page.)
4. How much does this service cost?
All services are free for students who are eligible.
5. How many times can I see a counselor?
There is a 12 session limit for each student per academic year. However, there is no limit to the number of group sessions a student can attend. Most students require less than 6 sessions. (See appointment page.)
6. What are the most common reasons why students use counseling services?
Stress management is the most common reason why students come to counseling at University of Bridgeport. Another common reason is difficulty in relationships. A third most common reason is depression. In addition to these three reasons, other issues include adjustment to college life, grief, trauma/PTSD, and body images issues. Students come to counseling services to be assisted and supported by trained professionals in a confidential setting to address the issue they are facing. (See counseling related issues page.)
7. Will things I speak about in counseling services be shared with others?
The answer to this question is no. Counseling services closely follows privacy laws that protect against information being shared. No information can be shared without the express written consent of the student. (See confidentiality page.)
8. Can I speak with a counselor if I know someone else who is having an issue and/or might need help?
Absolutely, counselors are available to discuss any concerns one might have regarding another student and offer guidance about how to address the situation. We encourage all faculty, staff, and students to visit Counseling Services, call us at 576-4454, or send us an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org with any concerns. 9. How does counseling services handle emergencies?
The staff of counseling services is trained in crisis counseling. During office hours emergencies are handled immediately. In the case of an evening or weekend crisis; if you live on campus call extension 4911 and the counselor will be notified. If you live off campus, call 911. Please call the counselor as soon as possible during office hours to ask for assistance. (See emergencies page.)
10. What if I am uncomfortable working with a counselor at UB?
This is not a problem. Counseling services frequently provides students assistance in locating treatment providers in the community outside of University of Bridgeport.
