Allow Your Student To Develop Time And Space

During college, your student will become more self-sufficient and independent. Allow your student to take responsibility for making decisions for him- or herself. It may be tempting to “take charge” at times, but it is crucial that your student have opportunities to make independent choices.

Have a conversation with your student about how often you should talk on the phone before he or she leaves for college. This should be a mutual decision based on what is comfortable for everyone involved. Many families find that a weekly “check in” call is a helpful way to remain connected while allowing your student some space.

E-mail is a great way to stay connected – messages can be sent and answered any time without interrupting studies (or fun).
