Counseling Issues

All of us will encounter difficulties in life, and sometimes we are unable to handle these challenges alone. Not being able to find a solution to a problem can be very distressing and often we must look to others for support.

Deciding whether or not to seek professional help can be perplexing. Counseling Services recognizes that many people feel there is a stigma associated with seeking counseling. Some fear that it is a sign of weakness, or that going to a counselor means a person is “crazy.” These stereotypes are inaccurate, but unfortunately keep many people from utilizing this resource. The University of Bridgeport community and Counseling Services make efforts to dispel these mistaken ideas.

It is a sign of strength and intelligence when a person makes an effort to address his/her problems and accepts the help available. In contrast, avoiding dealing with one’s problems and ignoring helpful resources often leads to greater difficulties.

At University of Bridgeport’s Counseling Services, approximately 200 students were seen in individual counseling last year for a total of over 750 appointments. Services were provided to assist with a variety of student concerns including (but not limited to):

Stress, Worry, or Anxiety
