The University of Bridgeport’s orientation program is a collaborative effort to provide programs and services to new first year, transfer, and graduate students. The program’s intent is to prepare students for their academic pursuits as well as initiate their integration into the University of Bridgeport’s (UB) intellectual, cultural, and social climate.

Orientation must be:

  • Intentional
  • Coherent
  • Based on theories and knowledge of learning and human development
  • Reflective of developmental and demographic profiles of the student population
  • Responsive to needs of individuals, special populations, and communities

Orientation is an ongoing process that begins when a student decides to attend the university. The process should aid students in understanding the nature and purpose of the institution, their membership in the academic community, and their relationship to the intellectual, cultural, and social climate of the University. The orientation process should include pre-enrollment, entry, and post-matriculation activities.

Goal

The goal of UB’s orientation program is to facilitate a smooth transition from high school, undergraduate school, or work environment to university life for new students.

Program Objectives

  1. Familiarize students with the mission and core values of UB.
  2. Students will be instilled with a sense of pride in their choice to attend UB.
  3. Engage university faculty, staff, current UB student leaders and administration in active planning, leadership, and implementation of the new student orientation program.
  4. Provide information about the policies, procedures, regulations, rights, and responsibilities governing UB.
  5. Create opportunities for incoming students to participate in social activities designed to acquaint them with their peers while introducing them to the diversity of cultures on campus and articulating the advantages and challenges of a diverse society.
  6. Provide opportunities for new students to engage with deans and faculty members in their respective programs.
  7. Provide new students with education, information, and guidance about how to manage the financial aspects of their education
  8. Provide academic advising, a schedule of classes, and fee statement.
  9. Work with students to identify where to go for critical university and community services to help them persist and succeed at UB.
  10. Introduce students to the many clubs and other organizations available at UB.  

Intended Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students are aware of university policies and procedures.
  2. Students are aware of what is expected of them academically and socially as a member of the UB community.
  3. Students are knowledgeable about where to go for critical university services that will help them to stay and succeed in college.
  4. Students are familiar with UB’s history, traditions, buildings, and future of the UB community.
  5. Students will have an understanding of the value of engaging in co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities available to them. 

Evaluation Methods

  1. Student exit evaluations (quantitative and qualitative)
  2. Orientation Leader evaluations
  3. Attendance levels

Results of Assessment

Results from program assessments will be presented to the UB Orientation Advisory Committee and the Dean of Students.

Decisions and Recommendations

Results from the assessment process will be used to improve the effectiveness of the New Student Orientation program.
