A week-long celebration from April 3-8, 2017!

The International Center for Students and Scholars is hosting a week-long series of events that highlight and celebrate the diversity of our student body. With students from almost 90 different countries, our campus is a true melting pot of culture!

The week will culminate on Saturday, April 8, with our annual International Festival Celebration, an evening of cultural performances, flag raising, and tabletop displays from around the world. We invite you to attend this showcase of talent from around that world!

“A Life in Service”: Peace Corps Panel

Date: Monday, April 3, 12:20 p.m. – 1:20 p.m.
Location: Carlson Hall, Room 214

Hear from a panel of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers from the UB and local community about stories from their service abroad and how their service has influenced what they are doing today. Pizza will be served!

Dance Workshop: Caribbean Dance

Getting to Know South America – A Foreign Language Lecture & Study Abroad Fair

Date: Tuesday, April 4, 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Location: Discovery Pavilion, Wahlstrom Library

UB’s own Miguel Arroyo and Brandon LaFavor will introduce you to South America’s geography, demographics, economics and culture–in Spanish! (Headphones will be available with English translation.) Special guest, Ilene Tillman from Academic Programs International (API), will also discuss study opportunities in South America.

Dance Workshop: Latin/Salsa

Waist Bead Workshop

Celebrate the continent of Africa! Im this special workshop hosted by the UB African Student Association, you will learn to make your own set of Waist Beads, which have been worn by women in Northern and Western Africa for centuries and are steeped in tradition and ceremony. Click the link above to learn more!

Pi Sigma Alpha Colloquium: The Role of Media in Conflict Resolution

Date: Wednesday, April 5, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Location: Tower Room, Arnold Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center

For the 11th consecutive year, a student-written proposal for a Chapter Activity Grant has been awarded to UB by Pi Sigma Alpha honor society. The grant of $1,200 will be used to fund “The Role of Media in Conflict Resolution,” a colloquium to be hosted at the University of Bridgeport. Three experts, including a guest from the United Nations, will participate. Join them for a remarkable and engaging discussion of current global conflicts and the role of media in seeking resolution.

“We Are One” Photo Contest

Date: Thursday, April 6, 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Location: Great Room, John J. Cox Student Center

Join us for an international photo contest celebrating our shared human experience. All UB community members are welcome to submit photos illustrating our common human spirit, which is shared across all countries and cultures, demonstrating that we all share much more in common than what would divide us. Students are invited to the Coffee Hour to view and vote on the photos, and enjoy light refreshments.

Holi Festival Celebration

Date: Friday, April 7, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Location: People’s Park (Outside the John J. Cox Student Center)

Celebrate the arrival of spring with a festival of colors as we highlight Asia as our final continent of the week! Holi is a traditional event in India and Nepal, commonly called the festival of colors or festival of sharing love.  It is a celebration of the coming of spring where participants play, chase and color each other with dry powder. International Festival Celebration

Location: Arnold Bernhard Arts and Humanities Center
Tickets: $3 for students, $5 for faculty/staff, $7 for guests

Join us for an evening festival during which UB students and staff from over 80 different countries share and celebrate their country and culture with fellow students, families, and the local community. Enjoy food from around the world, cultural performances, flag raising, and tabletop displays. We invite you to attend this showcase of global talent!
