 Director of Health Sciences Inter-Professional Research

 

The Leadership Opportunity

The Director of Health Sciences Inter-Professional Research is a new, 10-month position created to provide leadership direction for growth of the college’s research and scholarship programs in the health science fields. The position will report to the Vice President for Health Sciences in consultation with the Senior Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research.

 

University of Bridgeport Health Science Center – A 110,000 square foot, 8-story building located on the main campus in Bridgeport, CT housing the UB Clinics, a public outpatient clinic system providing care to approximately 25,000 patients annually and home of the teaching clinics for the College of Naturopathic Medicine, College of Chiropractic, Acupuncture Institute, Fones School of Dental Hygiene, and the Student Health Services Medical Clinic serves as the on-campus patient care hub for the University’s health science programs. Along with the Health Sciences Center there are multiple buildings in the health science cluster which house a multitude of health science-related academic programs ranging from associate to doctoral degrees, to include:  – BS-Health Sciences (multiple specialty tracks), Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Counseling, BSN and RN to BSN (Nursing), MS-Physician Assistant, MS- Human Nutrition, MS-Acupuncture, MS/Doctorate-Traditional Chinese Medicine, Doctor of Chiropractic, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, Doctorate-Health Sciences.– training the health care scientists and caregivers of tomorrow and changing health care one provider at a time.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an active, externally funded research program as a Principal Investigator.
  • Provide leadership to research programs in the health science programs within the institution and advice and counsel to the relevant deans/directors on matters related to research and scholarly activity for their programs.
  • Promote basic and translational research within the health sciences programs and with other colleges, departments, where appropriate, within the greater institution.
  • Enhance and promote research policies and guidelines within the health sciences.
  • Work with the vice president for health sciences and senior vice president for graduate studies and research in support of the health science program’s role in the execution of the Institutional Operational Strategic Plan for Research.
  • Develop and monitor strategic goals, objectives and budget that facilitates and enhances research and scholarly activities within the health science programs.
  • Foster and seek extramural funding for college research initiatives.
  • Work with the deans and directors to develop short- and long-range strategic research plans and assist in operationalizing the plans.
  • Work with partner organizations and other colleges to promote development of the research program and worthwhile collaborations.
  • Help strategize about how to build research infrastructure.
  • Serve as a liaison on UB research initiatives and planning campus-wide.
  • Advise the institution on the continuing build-out of suitable research areas and allocation of resources.
  • Advocate for the health science programs in inter-professional and intra-professional activities.
  • Mentor faculty in strategies for improving scholarly output and building programs of funded research and dissemination of information.
  • Manage the daily operations of the health sciences lab spaces and collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Research and Grant Support.
  • Determine the capacity, resources, limitations, and barriers to the development, submission, and ongoing management of research programs.
  • Collaboratively identify and implement strategies to promote scholarly output and recognition.
  • Regularly assess the scholarly productivity of faculty.
  • Contribute as an educator to the delivery of scholarly content and training, through classroom teaching, seminars, and workshops intended to build scientific capacity in the health science programs within the institution.
  • Promote the health sciences program’s research activities regionally, nationally, and internationally, through attendance and engagement in scientific conferences and media.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource person to colleagues, students, and community.

 

Qualifications – To successfully perform this job, the individual must qualify for a research faculty appointment and show evidence through previous work experience of an ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. A PhD or terminal degree in the health sciences is required. Degrees must be from accredited institutions. Candidate must have a track record of a sustainable program of clinical research with a previous federal funding history. A proven ability to mentor junior faculty must be evident on the curriculum vitae through collaborative works, such as senior authored publications.
The successful applicant will demonstrate experience working in or collaborating with a diverse group of health professionals on funded research, pilot work, and in publications.

The selected candidate will have:

  • An awareness of current issues/trends in research in health sciences
  • An interest, and preferably experience, in integrative medicine and models of collaborative care research
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from participants, regulatory agencies, faculty, staff, students, and members of the health professions and other business entities
  • Ability to present at scientific meetings and write articles for publication
  • Ability to present information effectively to individuals at all levels, ranging from children to members of a board of directors or legislators
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions to solve problems, and plan initiatives
  • Interpersonal and organizational skills to effectively provide leadership to multiple health sciences programs
