International
Political Economy & Diplomacy (B.A.)
With the conclusion of the Cold War the world has begun to seek
a new approach to international relations. In an era where there
is a growing focus on economic diplomacy, UB's B.A. in International
Political Economy and Diplomacy fills a crucial niche. UB's degree
in IPED was laid out by Dr. Stoyan Ganev, UB Distinguished Professor
of International Studies and President of the 49th General Assembly
of the United Nations. The major provides students with a comprehensive
understanding of the global political economy as well as the analytical
skills to evaluate change and direction. The study of the international
economic system provides knowledge in how it produces, distributes,
and uses wealth. And the study of the international political system
provides knowledge in how institutions and rules govern social and
economic development. Some examples of required courses are Political
Economy of North-South Relations, World Religions, Cultural Anthropology,
Diplomacy & Foreign Policy, International Law.
Social
Science (B.A.)
This major is an excellent introduction to social science methods
and it offers students the possibility to explore the various social
sciences before opting for a particular focus. Students may elect
to do a second major in either World Religions or IPED. The major
provides students with a liberal arts experience from the perspective
of the social sciences. Careers that students pursue after graduating
from this major include positions in government, the foreign service,
international agencies or businesses, law, teaching or community
service. Five optional concentrations are available in history,
international studies, political science, psychology, and sociology.
Some examples of required courses are American History, Roots of
Modern Culture, UN Studies, Social Inequality, and World Regional
Geography.
World
Religions (B.A.)
The World Religions provide the deepest and broadest reservoir of
values that shape culture and identity. Religious studies invite
us to engage in historical, social, scientific, and philosophical
reflection upon these core values. Those hoping to engage in a career
with an international focus in the 21st century should consider
this major. In the International College the option of a double
major with International Political Economy and Diplomacy is especially
attractive. The major is designed to provide students with a liberal
arts perspective toward the world's religions. Students are encouraged
to both reflect critically upon the various religions as well as
appreciate their powers in shaping cultures, civilizations and individuals.
Studies emphasize on the interaction of religions with their surrounding
social, historical, political and economic circumstances. Minors
in philosophy, social science, and English can be obtained together
with the major. Some examples of required courses are Christianity,
Buddhism, Hinduism, Religion and Fiction, World Scriptures, and
Women in Judaism.
