Mission Statement
Initiated in 1996 under the auspices of the college of Graduate and
Undergraduate Studies, the New England Center for International and
Regional Studies is committed to advancing the following academic
goals and objectives:
- The Center will develop undergraduate and graduate courses,
concentrations, minors, majors, and graduate programs aimed at
preparing young people for careers in diplomacy, international
public service, and in international business with a special
focus on emerging markets.
- The Center will recruit and strive to educate qualified
undergraduates and graduates who will later be able to fulfill
important leadership roles in governmental, intergovernmental,
and non-governmental organizations as well as in the private
commercial sector.
- The Center will serve as a resource center on international
law and international business in the New York-Connecticut area.
- The Center will develop courses and seminars on economic
development for various regions including Latin America, East
Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe.
- The Center will sponsor speakers, conferences and symposia
on international business and international and regional affairs.
- The Center will collaborate with the Schools of the College
of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in an effort to better
prepare students for the various demands of the global environment
in which UB alumni will compete in the 21st century.
Degree Programs
In conjunction with the School of Business, the Center offers
the B.S. in International Business and in conjunction with the
School of Art, Humanities and Social Sciences, it offers a B.A.
in Social Sciences with a concentration in International Studies.
Students are registered both as students of the Center and of
the School of Business or the School of Art, Humanities and
Social Sciences based upon their major. Additional degree and
certificate programs are currently being planned.
Internship Programs
Business students with strong academic records will be given the
opportunity to intern in either a New York or a Connecticut-based
corporation. Social Sciences students with a strong academic record
will be afforded the opportunity to intern in an international
organization or in an embassy or permanent mission in the New York
area. All Center students in good standing will be expected to
fulfill an internship prior to graduation.
Admissions
To qualify for the program, students must be accepted by both
the New England Center for International and Regional Studies
and the School of Art, Humanities and Social Sciences or the
School of Business (depending on the student's intended major).
A student is admitted based on evaluation of high school
transcripts, class rank and SAT scores. Students are expected
to have at least a GPA of 3.0 and SAT scores of at least 1000
as well as strong recommendations from their high school
counselor and other appropriate individuals. Foreign students
will take the TOEFL examination in lieu of the SAT and will be
expected to have a minimum score of 550.
