Facts: What an MBA can do for You

Surveys show that with an MBA you stand to earn about $400,000 more over your lifetime than does someone who has just a bachelor’s degree. The average income for a recent MBA graduate is $56,000; this is higher than most other professions. Estimates are that you will have 5 occupations — positions in 5 different companies doing different things with your knowledge. An MBA expands your ability to analyze and solve problems in different types of businesses. Your ability to communicate effectively in a business setting — to write and speak well -- will have a great influence on your different occupations. An MBA helps you to develop better communications skills, and those skills will improve your promotional potential and ability to enjoy your career.

Our MBA graduates with no previous experience receive job offers with incomes ranging from $40,000 to $70,000/year. Our experienced students who already hold positions with incomes from $40,000 to $200,000/year usually receive promotions and or salary increases during or shortly after they finish their programs.

Welcome to the Opportunity to Improve your Career Potential

Welcome to the opportunity to earn an outstanding Internationally recognized MBA in General Administration with the option to earn a concentration by taking a few additional courses. The areas for concentration are Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, Management and Operations, Entrepreneurship, Global Marketing, and Computer Applications and Information Systems (CAIS). Concentrations are also available in Computer Science, and Fashion Marketing and Merchandising. Students may earn as many concentrations as they like.

We also have a special option for some applicants who did not do well in their undergraduate studies but have since become more serious about education after several years in the workplace. For these students we have the special student option. As a special student you will demonstrate your ability to do graduate level work by completing the first 4 core courses in our program with grades of ‘B’ or higher. Once this has been done we will transfer you and your grades to the MBA Program.

Program Delivery

The MBA is offered for full-time or part-time study with classes scheduled in Bridgeport and Stamford. Acceptable qualifications and space permitting, On-Campus students may also take some core courses with executives in the Stamford weekend program.

Special program variations are also allowed for executives admitted to the evening program that would like to take courses from both the Weekend and On-campus Programs. And, excepting F-1 International students, all students may take as few courses as they would like at any given time.

Program Particulars

The curriculum is designed to recognize substantial diversity in preparation and experience for students entering MBA study, as well as different goals and expectations of students after graduation. Therefore applicants from all undergraduate and graduate majors are accepted with no previous education or experience in business.

The MBA requires 30 to 54 semester hours of study depending on the student's academic background and level of academic achievement. Students with a recent four-year bachelor's degree and good academic average from an accredited business college may be able to complete the MBA with 30 semester hours of advanced study — 10 courses. Students with a bachelor's degree in a non-business field may require up to 24 credits of business core courses as foundation for the MBA degree — 8 courses. Waiver of core requirements will be considered upon presentation of transcripts that show successful completion of core-equivalent courses with grades of ‘B’ or better as measured in the U.S. grading system.

Application Requirements (Summarized below)

The GMAT is required when there is no other way for us to evaluate your ability to do graduate level work. For those who have demonstrated this ability the GMAT may be waived in several ways.

The GMAT is waived for students who present business school related transcripts that show an overall QPA of 3.3. The GMAT is waived for those with more than 3 years of professional experience upon presentation of an acceptable resume, and the GMAT is waived for those who have already earned a master’s degree. A GMAT score is required of applicants with less than three years of full-time professional business experience. Other applicants with business related undergraduate degrees with QPA’s of less than 3.3, and those who are graduates of degree programs other than business are required to take the GMAT. GRE scores are not accepted.

For F-1 International applicants a minimum score of 550 (paper) or 213
(computer) on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required. Applicants may also present an acceptable substitute.

Applicants who are accepted but who score less than TOEFL 550 will be required to take an equivalency test upon arrival at UB.  Those that do not pass the equivalency test will be required to take English until reaching equivalency of TOEFL 550.  Depending on proficiency in English students taking English to improve their skills may or may not be allowed to take MBA courses until sufficient skills have been reached.

An International applicant who has graduated from a U.S. college is waived
from the TOEFL requirement.

Applications should be submitted to the office of graduate admissions either by mail or on-line. If you will be applying for admission from outside the continental U.S. you should try to apply by June 1 for the fall, and November 1 for the spring semester. This is to allow for postal time in both directions and visa approvals. If you will be applying from within the continental U.S., about July 1 would be okay for the fall, and December 1 for the spring.

A personal statement of the student’s reasons and purposes for pursuing an MBA is required, along with two letters of recommendation.

All applicants are required to show evidence of and possess useful skills in common computer word-processing and spreadsheet programs, communication by email and the ability to do research using any web browser. In the absence of demonstrable computer skills, CAIS 191, Introduction to Computers, is a prerequisite to the MBA program.

Summary of Application Requirements

a)   Application
b)   All college level transcripts (F-1 students send copies, bring originals)
c)   Personal Statement (less than one page is okay)
d)   Letters of recommendation (2)
e)   GMAT, professional resume or other waiver material
f)    TOEFL or substitute (for F-1 International students)
g)   Application fee if you are not already a UB student or graduate

If you still have questions about application procedures please go to Application Requirements and Procedures in our FAQ’s.

Impressing upon you the point made earlier about advancement and income potential, all applicants are also expected to have an appropriate level of writing and speaking skills in English. F-1 applicants who score less than TOEFL 600, and students with English that needs improvement, will be required to take and pass a prerequisite course in Business English during their first year of study.

Waivers: Students with recent prior study of core subjects at an accredited business college may be eligible for waiver and/or exemption from core courses. Waiver of any course based on undergraduate or graduate study normally requires at least three semester hours of study with a minimum of a ‘B’ grade as measured in the U.S. grading system. For students from countries that use the Mark System this is equivalent to 55/100 Marks*. A student will also receive a waiver for successful completion of a competency examination if the student is eligible to take it and if it’s available in the subject. (Credit-by-examination program (CLEP®) exams are also accepted.) Students eligible to waive core courses may proceed directly to take advanced courses for which they have completed the appropriate core prerequisite.

*Where 55 is about a grade of ‘B’ or 80% in this system for a (usually) combined 2-subject course that represents a teaching time duration of 100 (8-credits) of which about 4-credits can be attributed to the subject matter. India and Pakistan are among the countries that use this system.

MBA Advanced Course Requirements
The Program requires 10 advanced courses. All 10 advanced Courses are 3 semester hours of credit each — a total of 30 credits. A maximum of 6 Credits may be transferred from previous related graduate level course work with grades of ‘B’ or higher.

***The Capstone course is the final course for the MBA program and is studied generally when a student completes elective and major courses. This provides an integrating analysis for overall management learning, and includes business strategy and political and international issues for management decision making.

Careers Thereafter

Between UB, in Bridgeport, and the New York City metropolitan area are some of the world’s largest corporations and many others than help our economy prosper. Corporations around the world, large and small, need the knowledge that only an MBA can provide.

With or without the ability to speak more than one language, our students have internships in some of the best corporations in a wide variety of businesses and industries in New York and Connecticut. A short list of corporations that have offered internships include Citicorp, Chase Bank, People’s Bank, US Surgical, Lehman Brothers, GE Power Systems, GE Capital, GE Global, UBS Warburg, and many investment boutiques near Wall Street and in Connecticut, and international consulting companies in these areas.

Our graduates start their own companies, return home to run the family business, and learn the skills and confidence to run their own professional practice. They also work for National Governments and work for some of the world’s best known and respected corporations, including IBM; GE; Spear, Leeds & Kellogg; PricewaterhouseCoopers; Telekurs Financial; Macy’s; Pitney Bowes; KPMG; Bloomberg; Herold (UK), and many others.

Thoughts for the undecided

Invest in your life. Earn an outstanding internationally recognized MBA from the University of Bridgeport. Then network with your peers to form lasting relationships all over the globe.

But don’t forget Us!

After you graduate you are still part of the UB family. We expect to hear from you occasionally, and perhaps you will come back someday as a guest speaker or even as faculty to teach other students what they should know.

We will also try to be a resource for your continued education, as in concentrations, special certificates and a future doctoral program.
