From Wilderness to Storied Space, or the End of American Nature Writing
October 14: Wendy Harding, University of Toulouse, France “From Wilderness to Storied Space, or the End of American Nature Writing”Wilderness
is a notion with a long, complex history in American culture. William
Cronon’s
controversial
essay, “The Trouble with Wilderness”
suggests that the idea has now attained the limits of its usefulness.
Professor Harding will present and discuss some of the new writing on
place that illustrates the imprint of human existence in spaces that
have been conceived of as deserted, uninhabited, or pristine. The new
writing emphasizes community responsibility over personal discovery and
unearths the stories in places once conceived of as empty. Dr. Harding
