Historian of Connecticut (1984-2004) “Sarah Banks and the Married
Women's Property Act of 1877”
On October 13, Professor Christopher Collier will speak at Necessary
Voices on his current project, about a Fairfield woman who he says
should be a Feminist hero but is an unknown. Sarah Banks Sherwood spent
6 months in the county jail in Bridgeport in 1865 for contesting
Connecticut's coverture policies in 1865.
Professor Collier is teaching a history course here this semester, The
History of Connecticut. This class marks the 50th anniversary of the
first class he taught at UB in the 1960s! Besides having been the
official Connecticut State Historian (1984-2004), he is well known for
his many children's history books, the most famous of which is "My
Brother Sam Is Dead," about the Revolutionary War. It won a Newbery
Honor. He is now Professor Emeritus of History at UConn.
