The UB Fashion Show
The Fashion Merchandising & Retailing Department hosts a fashion show each Spring, showing current styles from the New York and local markets. It is always an exciting, dramatic, fun-filled, musical event.
Students Run the Show
The students plan, budget, organize, write commentary, work on promotion, choose fashions, work behind the scenes, set the stage and review the show. It is totally a team effort.
Putting on a Great Show with the Latest Fashions
The class breaks up into different committees, including Clothing, Backstage, Staging, Technology, Commentary, Publicity and Modeling. From January until early April they give it their all – including:
- choosing a theme
- coordinating the publicity and
- using Photoshop to design flyers, brochures and a banner to hang in Marina dining hall
- having model try-outs
- finding and ordering props for the set
- sketching the backroom and the stage
- listening to and choosing the music (93 songs for last year’s show)
- finding entertainment
- writing commentary
- studying trends for the current Spring
- shopping the stores to choose the apparel
Before the Show
Once the clothing and accessories are chosen, there is a two day fitting in the department. All of the models must try on the clothes that have been placed in the show. There is a dress rehearsal, and then finally – the main event! There are always two shows in the Student Center on campus – one at 4 PM and one at 7 PM, and admission is free.
A Dynamic, Entertaining, and Successful Show
Close to seven hundred guests attended the two shows, held in the John J. Cox Student Center, and immersed themselves in the sights of the newest, hottest fashions for Spring and Summer 2012 while moving to the beat of songs played by DJ Jim Nuzzo, of Dance To The Music, from Wilton, Connecticut.
Thirty-one of the University of Bridgeport’s finest modeled detailed swimwear, romantic lingerie, must-have casual, professional business, shimmering evening and chic club looks in the most breathtaking colors and lush fabrics, all hand-picked to dazzle. At the same time a dynamic student-produced video and slide show of New York City entertained the guests. And of course, the University’s own United We Step performed on stage.
