The main motive of this research project is to investigate the issues related to the implementation of Overlay End-System multicast (ESM) which is currently considered as a scalable alternative of IP multicast. Specifically, this research project will be primarily focused on the development of both analytical and mathematical models for all multicasting techniques such as unicast, multiple unicast, IP multicast, and overlay ESM. The proposed analytical and mathematical models provide an optimized architecture for the implementation of overlay ESM for the fast and stable streaming of multimedia applications. In addition, based on the proposed analytical and mathematical models, the research project will derive a closed-form expression for approximating both end-to-end delay and the required bandwidth. In this project, we will also evaluate the performance of different multicasting schemes such as unicast, multiple unicast, IP multicast, and end system multicasting. In order to perform the experimental verifications and performance evaluations, both simulation and numerical analysis of the multicast systems will be performed. Our analytical and mathematical study along with a comprehensive simulation and numerical analysis of multicasting approaches helps researchers to understand the effectiveness of this mechanism not only from the streaming media applications perspective but also from the network operation costs point of view.
