During his tenure as a member of the faculty at the University of Bridgeport, Dr. James J. Ritchie brought many changes to the School of Education. As Dean of the School of Education and Human Resources Dr. Ritchie raised admission standards while simultaneously leading strong enrollment growth in all program areas; particularly with the educator preparation programs offered at the Bridgeport campus and at the university’s Stamford and Waterbury satellite facilities. As Dean, Dr. Ritchie guided the school successfully through three accreditations and significantly improved the reputation of the school’s programs. Dr. Ritchie also helped launch an international program that enables educators from Taiwan to earn a Master’s in education and language. Some of these international students came to the UB campus for summers only until they got their degrees; others attend classes on campus year-round.
Ritchie is a University of Bridgeport alumnus who after serving four years in the Navy during the Korean War Conflict, came to UB to get his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He had a love for mathematics and chose mathematics as his field in teaching. He later went on to get a Sixth-Year Certificate in supervision and administration at Southern Connecticut State University and earned graduate credits in mathematics as a special student at Fairfield and New York Universities. Dr. Ritchie earned his Ed.D. In educational leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University.
His teaching career includes a year teaching in Stavanger, Norway, at a school set up by ODECO, an oil exploration company, for North Sea drillers. Ritchie began his career as a math teacher in the Trumbull Connecticut school district. Subsequently he moved to the Region 5 School District, serving Bethany, Orange and Woodbridge, Connecticut where he was an Assistant Principal and Director of Administration and Finance. In 1984 Dr. Ritchie was appointed by the Plainville, Connecticut school system as Superintendent of Schools, a position he held for 13 years. During his tenure as Plainville’s Superintendent, Dr. Ritchie was recognized as Connecticut’s Superintendent of the Year. In 1998 Dr. Ritchie began service as Dean, School of Education and Human Services at UB. At present Dr. Ritchie is an Executive Search Consultant, does school accreditation work internationally and is a Visiting Professor of Educational Leadership in the UB Department of Educational Leadership.
