Dr. Lorentzen began her teaching career as a clinical and dental materials laboratory instructor after graduation in 1975. Early career interests involved private practice employment and a return to Fones School in 1995 as the Community Rotation Coordinator. Marcia has been a full-time faculty member since 2000, currently teaching undergraduate Periodontology and Master’s Clinical and Didactic Educational Concepts. Academic honors include selection as a Dana Scholar, membership in Sigma Phi Alpha National Dental Hygiene Honor Society, and election into the all-academic discipline Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. In 2011, Dr. Lorentzen earned the Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership after successfully defending her dissertation Constructing a Dental Hygiene Education: A Survey of Educational Methods.
In the University, Marcia has been Senate Secretary and on the Faculty Handbook Committee, Academic Technology Steering Committee, and Safety Committee. Dr. Lorentzen is currently in University Senate and Fones School Academic Standards, Admissions, and Curriculum Management Committees. She is a presenter for Sigma Phi Alpha Dental Hygiene National Board Review and as requested on educational methods and dental hygiene topics.
Marcia is a member of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene, American Dental Education Association, American Dental Hygienists’ Association, Connecticut Dental Hygienists’ Association, and local component association. Dr. Lorentzen represents the interests of dental hygienists through positions in the Association, as President of CDHA 1994-1995, past delegate to the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, previous Dental Hygiene Curriculum Consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation, and currently the ADHA State Education Network Liaison for Connecticut.
