Dental Hygiene Clinical Educators Workshop/Conference

The Clinical Educators Workshop/Conference offered to dental hygiene educators is a two day workshop designed to enhance the educational and clinical methodologies of current clinical teaching. Each year the variety of topics change according to the needs of today’s dental hygiene programs. Sessions are interactive, utilizing effective instructional strategies and open discussion. Participants will be given materials to share with their department faculty. Collegial relationships will be developed.

The workshop/conference focuses on applying Best Practices in teaching and learning in higher education. The focus of today’s educator is on student-centered learning, yet making this a reality is challenging. This workshop/conference will explore pedagogies that lend themselves to the development of critical thinking, student-directed learning, engagement of the learner, and real-time feedback to correct and re-enforce curriculum content.

This workshop/conference will navigate through dental hygiene education, exploring the science and facilitating the practice of teaching methods in health science education that enhance student learning and support expectations of an accredited dental hygiene education.

Goals of CEW 2012
The purpose of this workshop/conference is to provide dental hygiene clinical educators opportunities to:
  • Examine instructional methods that support the needs of today’s dental hygiene students
  • Recognize instructional strategies that foster critical thinking and problem solving
  • Apply current research to dental hygiene clinical and laboratory education
  • Self-assess teaching styles and facilitate the learning process
  • Practice evidence-based learner-centered teaching skills   

Objectives of the Course Sessions:
Participants in workshop/conference will be able to:

  • Demonstrate clinical and laboratory skills
  • Discuss “getting the best from your students”
  • Identify methods to calibrate faculty teams
  • Teach for retention and provide opportunities for deliberate practice
  • Develop methods for assessing competencies
  • Validate educational practices supporting accreditation standards
  • Provide immediate feedback to students through a variety of techniques
