Professor Martha Petersen began her medical career as a lay midwife in southwestern Colorado, doing home deliveries for migrant workers and ‘hippies’ with the backup of doctors from the National Health Service Corps. After graduation from the Physician Assistant Department of Trevecca Nazarene University, Professor Petersen settled in the Pocono Mountains in eastern Pennsylvania and worked clinically for twenty years in Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery and Radiation Oncology. Professor Peterson received her Masters in Public Health from East Stroudsburg State University in Pennsylvania with a concentration in community health education, conducting research on a county wide multi-faceted approach for the promotion of breast feeding.
Professor Petersen has spent an extensive amount of time in clinical practice, teaching and curriculum development; holding faculty positions most recently at Duquesne University and University of Pittsburgh. Her skill in curriculum development and teaching makes her a much sought after presenter and writer. Professor Petersen has presented at many national conferences and has contributed to several textbook chapters.
She combines a wealth of clinical experience and her love for student development and teaching to benefit the University of Bridgeport Physician Assistant Institute.
