Faculty and Staff
All Instructors at the English Language Institute at the University of Bridgeport have degrees in TESOL, TESL/TEFL, Applied Linguistics, languages or a related field. They share a dedication to excellent teaching, to professional development, and to the success and happiness of their students.
Meg Cooney, Director
Meg is responsible for all aspects of the program, academic and administrative. She has been Director since 2001 and started teaching in the ELI program when it first started in 1993. She holds a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and a M.Ed. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Boston University. She has traveled extensively and studied abroad during college, actually meeting her husband on that trip.

Jennie Farnell, Assistant Director
Jennie’s responsibilities center on curriculum, assessment, student advising, and professional development of the teaching staff. She holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of New England, Armidale, Australia. She has been teaching ESL/EFL since 1998 to all levels and ages of students, from the wilds of Japanese junior high school to slightly tamer American university students.

Danusia Nowakowska, Student Services Coordinator
Danusia takes care of the many tasks outside of the classroom that make the program run smoothly and increase student comfort. You will hear first from her when you tell us you are coming and she will help you while you are here with any issues with other offices. She has an M.S. in TESOL from Central Connecticut State University and is bilingual Polish/English. She has lived and worked in Warsaw, Poland and Paris, France.

Karen L. Howling, Senior Instructor
KL has more than 26 years teaching college age students EFL or ESL in the United States and in the Middle East. She has a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Georgetown University and a Master’s degree in Counseling Education from Portland State University. She is fluent in German as she studied and worked in southern Germany, and having lived in the Middle East for 18 years, she has traveled throughout that region of the world, Europe, and the Far East.

Steven M. Rashba, Senior Instructor
Steve has taught ESL, EFL, and Business English since 1991. He has also had a successful career in private business. He holds a B.A. in Economics and Languages from Lafayette College, a professional designation in Risk Management/Financing (ARM) through the American Institute, and a certificate in Supervisory Management (SM). He lived in Israel for two years, becoming fluent in Hebrew. He has also studied French, Spanish, and Arabic.

Brandon LaFavor, Director of Education Abroad/Activities Coordinator
Brandon organizes extracurricular trips and activities for ELI students, including matching them with American students for conversation and games in the UBuddies program. He can help you find something fun to do on the weekend after you’ve finished your homework! He has a M.S. in International Higher Education and has studied and lived in Latin America. He is fluent in Spanish and is an Adjunct Professor of Spanish here at the University of Bridgeport.
